Hyatt Hotels & Resorts would like to take this opportunity to clarify Hyatt’s position regarding Manchester Financial Group, LP and Mr. Manchester's financial support of Proposition 8, known as the California Marriage Protection Act. Unfortunately, as a result of certain press articles, there have been some misperceptions created about Hyatt. Though Mr. Manchester is the owner of Manchester Grand Hyatt San Diego, he does not speak for Hyatt Hotels & Resorts.

As a hotel management company, Hyatt manages hotels worldwide, including Manchester Grand Hyatt San Diego, in a manner consistent with Hyatt brand standards. We want to reaffirm our commitment to the inclusive, diverse culture Hyatt employees enjoy and the welcoming spirit we extend to all of our guests.

The sincerity of Hyatt’s significant commitments to the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender (GLBT) community has generated many accolades and much recognition including:

  • America’s largest advocacy group for GLBT, the Human Rights Campaign, honored Hyatt’s respect for the GLBT community by placing Hyatt on its “2008 Best Places to Work” list, marking Hyatt’s fifth consecutive year of being named among the GLBT community’s most admired employers and attaining a 100% score in their annual survey
  • Advocate Magazine named Hyatt as one of the “Top-Ten Gay Friendly Employers in America”
  • DiversityInc.com rated Hyatt among the “Top Companies for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Employees”
  • Hyatt is also a long time supporter and partner of GLAAD, the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation and IGLTA, the International Gay Lesbian Travel Association

Additionally:

  • Hyatt was the first major hotel company to offer Domestic Partners benefits, including changes to bereavement policies, which created FMLA like benefits (not required under Federal Law at the time) for Domestic Partners that included Gender Identity as part of our EEO policies and openly advertised in GLBT mediums of communication, print and on-line.
  • Hyatt is official partners with the International Gay Lesbian Travel Association (IGLTA), the world’s leading travel trade association committed to growing and enhancing its members’ gay and lesbian tourism business through education, promotion and networking.

San Diego's GLBT community benefits from Hyatt's successful operation of Manchester Grand Hyatt San Diego: the families of all fulltime associates at the hotel enjoy the option of receiving Domestic Partner Benefits, such as medical leave, bereavement pay and relocation expenses. Also, the hotel annually supports the acclaimed Mama's Kitchen program and the Greater San Diego Business Association, the second largest gay and lesbian chamber of commerce in the nation.

Because of these pro-GLBT actions, the hotel is "TAG Approved" by the International Gay Lesbian Travel Association. This is the respected designation that confirms our commitment to enforce non-discriminatory policies.

Regrettably, you may also be aware that third party solicitations to our customers have been unfairly misrepresenting Hyatt’s proven commitment to diversity and fairness. In reality, we enjoy a collaborative and excellent working relationship with our employees at Manchester Grand Hyatt San Diego, and we have an unmatched record of treating our employees fairly by protecting their employment rights.

Hyatt remains steadfastly committed to diversity in the workplace. We ask for your continued support and hope Hyatt’s record on diversity speaks for itself.

Know the Truth

  • Mr. Manchester gave $125,000 contribution to “Yes on 8” campaign.
  • After passage, the gay community focused its anger at Mr. Manchester, and others, by initiating a well organized boycott and negative press generating campaign.
  • Local union, Unite Here, sensing a vulnerability, latched onto this opportunity to press for unionization of the property, bringing up old and baseless charges about Room Attendants.
  • Unite Here initiated an aggressive proactive campaign to divert existing convention business.
  • Activists have ignored Hyatt’s strong and lengthy history of diversity, equality and support for the gay and lesbian community in order to go after Mr. Manchester and Manchester Grand Hyatt.
